Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 21, 2026

In short: the text you translate goes from your browser straight to the translation service and never to our servers. We do not collect personal data, we do not use analytics, ads or cookies, and we never sell or share data.

Who we are

Google Translate Extension for Chrome (the extension) and translate-extension.online (the website) are made by Captain Software Limited, Unit B, 11/F, 23 Thomson Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Contact: info@captainlab.dev.

What the extension processes and where it goes

Text you translate

When you translate selected text, a word, text typed into the extension popup, or a whole page, the extension sends that text from your browser directly to a translation service and shows the answer. The text is used only to get the translation. It never passes through our servers, and we do not store, log or see it.

Depending on availability, the extension uses one of these services, in this order:

  • Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com, translate-pa.googleapis.com), Google Privacy Policy;
  • Yandex Translate (translate.yandex.net), Yandex Privacy Policy;
  • the translation model built into Google Chrome, which runs on your device, so the text does not leave your computer.

The label under each translation shows which service answered. Microsoft Translator may be added to this list later; this policy will be updated before that happens.

Your settings

Your target language, theme, the on/off state of the selection button and the lists of sites you switch on or off are stored in Chrome's extension storage in your browser. If Chrome sync is on, Chrome syncs them between your devices through your Google account. They are not sent to us.

Listening to a translation

When you press the speaker button, the translation is passed to Chrome's text-to-speech feature, which uses the voices of your browser or operating system.

Engine configuration

About every six hours the extension downloads a small configuration file from translate-extension.online that says which translation services to use. The request contains no text, settings or identifiers. Like any web server, ours keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, browser version) for a short period for security and troubleshooting.

Welcome page

Once, after you install the extension, it opens translate-extension.online/welcome/ with tips on how to use it. It does not open any other tabs.

Permissions and why they are needed

  • Access to all websites: to show the translate button next to selected text and to translate the page you are reading, on any site.
  • activeTab and scripting: to translate the current tab when you click the icon, use a shortcut or the right-click menu.
  • contextMenus: to add "Translate" to the right-click menu.
  • storage: to remember your settings.
  • tts: to read translations aloud.

What we do not do

  • We do not collect personal information, browsing history or the content of pages you visit.
  • We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking in the extension or on the website, and the website sets no cookies.
  • We do not sell, rent or share data, and we do not use it for creditworthiness, lending or any purpose unrelated to translation.

The use of information received by the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Children

The extension is a general audience tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

Your choices

You can turn off the selection button on any site or everywhere, and stop translating a page at any time with Show original. Removing the extension deletes its settings from your browser.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the extension handles data, we will update this page and the date above before the change takes effect.
